HOW TO BRING LOCAL COMMUNITY TOGETHER? BY REBRANDING PIEROGIES, OF COURSE
The Traffic Design Festival exists to explore and create urban graphic design and art, but most importantly, to unite people and give them something to cherish. Making people proud of their neighbourhoods, seeing the local community benefit from the work of the best designers in the industry and learning from the residents - that is the true aim of our endeavours. The Słoneczny Milk Bar redesign project made all of this happen.
Słoneczny has a special place in every Gdynia-bred person’s heart. The unchanging formula of simple, Polish dishes, accessible price range and unforgettable atmosphere of a milk bar place it at the very top of iconic independent businesses of Gdynia. However, for years its front had been in a dire need of a new visual identity.
For this project we invited Filip and Ula from Syfon Studio to create the design. The milk bar, situated in a beautiful, modernist building, gave them an opportunity to make a nostalgic trip. The main sign, inspired by 70s neon craze, has been assembled from neon glass tube, while the B◌A◌R M◌L◌E◌C◌Z◌N◌Y side sign has been assorted from… pipe caps.
The refreshed facade made the enormous windows stand out even more.
To celebrate the new look, Traffic Design teamed up with the Słoneczny Milk Bar staff and organised an official re-opening, Gordon Ramsay style. The locals mingled with design and art crew (some of them being from the neighbourhood themselves), as an enormous amount of pierogies and other staple dishes were being devoured in this professional tasting session. A true milk bar renaissance.
